Alabama title and registration basics for auction buyers
A general orientation to the paperwork after you win. The specifics depend on the vehicle and on you, so confirm them with the office.
Not legal or tax advice. This is a general orientation. The exact requirements depend on the vehicle, where you live and how you are buying. Confirm the details with our office and with your county licensing office before you rely on them.
The title is the proof of ownership
In Alabama, a vehicle's title is the document that shows who owns it. After payment clears, the office works with you on the paperwork to move the title into your name. The lot page states the title status (for example clean, salvage or rebuilt) so you know what you are buying before you bid.
Expect more than the winning bid
Buying a vehicle in Alabama normally involves state and local charges on top of the price: vehicle tax, title and registration fees, and sometimes a VIN verification or inspection. Who pays what, how much and by when depends on the circumstances. Ask your specialist what applies to your purchase, and check the amounts with your county licensing office.
Buying from out of state
If the vehicle is leaving Alabama, registration and tax are generally handled by the state you will register it in. Rules and temporary-permit options vary between states, so look up your own state's requirements before you arrange transport, and tell the office where the vehicle is going.
Businesses and dealers
If you are buying for a company, register a business account and have the business name, tax ID and any dealer license number ready. Ask the office how that affects paperwork for your purchase.
What to bring or send
